High Road School students practiced their running and throwing in preparation for this weekend's Special Olympics track meet at Prospect High School. Under the direction of the school's Special Olympics Head Coach and Physical Education teacher Pat Hurst, the athletes ran a series of sprints, then practiced throwing a softball in a shot-put style motion at Maple Trail Park near the school. Local students with special needs prepared last Friday for the upcoming Region B Spring Games held by Special Olympics Illinois. The Spring Games will take place later in April at Prospect High School. Students at High Road School of Mount Prospect, 580 Slawin Court, have been working tirelessly, showing remarkable dedication and enthusiasm for the Special Olympics. People with disabilities often face significant barriers to finding employment, both in learning applicable job skills and employers' awareness of their capabilities. Mount Prospect students shine at the Illinois Special Olympics Spring Games

Special Olympics Spring Games took place on Sunday April 16th at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect. High Road School had 6 athletes compete in a either the 50 Meter Dash, 100 M Dash, Softball Throw or Mini-Javelin Throw. Diego Torres, Bryan Lopez, Bryce Watts and Alex Arroyo all placed in 1st in their running event which qualifies them for State Summer Games which will take place in June down in Bloomington-Normal on the Campus of Illinois State University. When Brenda Gionnoulis, the administrative assistant for High Road School of Mount Prospect, was asked for gift ideas to celebrate her upcoming birthday, she had one request: For other staff members to join her for a volunteer opportunity at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a nonprofit organization that works with partners to distribute hand-packed meals in schools, orphanages, clinics, and feeding programs around the world. On November 19th, Brenda’s birthday wish came true when 12 of her colleagues volunteered with her to make and pack meals—24,624 meals, to be exact, or enough to feed 67 children for an entire year!
