Women’s Empowerment Luncheon

Thunderbolt Academy held our First Annual Women's Empowerment Luncheon on March 29th.  Mrs. Powell, one of our school social workers, did an amazing job putting together this powerful event for our Thunderbolt ladies.  We invited three guest speakers: Judge Todd, Denise Powell and Janay Harden who each spoke words of encouragement and guidance to our female students. Mrs. Lugo directed a dance with two of our middle school students Zariah Bard and Briaisha Hunter.  We also had poem readings by two of our Senior student government members, Alay'siah and Nylayah.  Everyone took part in our mirror activity: "Look what I see...," [...]

High Road School of Peoria celebrates neuro diverse learners and the power of music

The goal is to create a nurturing and stimulating environment that allows for learning and staff and student relationships to [...]

Community gardens help students blossom and grow. As a therapist, I’ve seen it firsthand.

The garden teaches students about nutrition, stewardship of the earth, collaboration of neighbors and more. Leiser is an occupational therapist at the Sierra School of San Diego, which focuses on special education and is located in San Carlos. She lives in North Park. I distinctly remember the first time I stepped foot into the San Carlos Community Garden. It was a hot San Diego summer day four years ago and I was touring the campus as an occupational therapy student for my level two fieldwork rotation. I was ecstatic being able to implement outdoor therapy for my students in a [...]

Whether students on the spectrum need minimal support or a great deal of individualized attention, there are specific needs to take into consideration. Research is constantly expanding our knowledge on effective methods to teach our students with ASD [...]
