This summer, Excel Academy of Chicago students, part of the Chicago Public Schools’ Options Network, participated in the city-wide One Summer Chicago program. Over the course of six weeks, more than 110 students across Roseland, South Shore, Southwest, and Englewood Excel Academy schools explored new areas of the city, engaging in activities and opportunities that many had never been exposed to before.

The One Summer Chicago program, funded by the City of Chicago and The Alternative Schools Network, provides youth ages 14-24 with part-time weekly employment and enrichment programs during the summer months.

Anthony Haley Jr., Ed.D., regional director of Excel Academies of Chicago, emphasized the program’s impact: “One Summer Chicago provides enriching summer programming for youth, reducing violence and minimizing idle time. We are very grateful to the City for their valuable initiative.”

Students participated in activities such as financial literacy workshops, recruitment strategy training, sports camps, including basketball and boxing, and even a drone technology classes. Participants also had the chance to explore various career paths through job placements and  internships.

Several students secured summer positions at local restaurants, businesses, churches, the YMCA, and even within their own schools as administrative interns.

Shaniah Sanders, 19, student at Excel Roseland, shared her perspective: “I loved this program because it offered me experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It gave me the chance to get out of the house and really enjoy my summer.”
