Sierra Peoria celebrates the arrival of April as Autism Awareness Month

The month of April is dedicated to autism awareness. Sierra School of Peoria has been participating in and coordinating many activities for our students and families. We started off the month with “light it up blue” masks for all the staff. Our high school transitions team, staff, and students who run the coffee cart created specialty drinks for the month, “light it up blue” foam for the latte drinks and a signature blue lemonade. Educators discuss the education needs of autistic students

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Yesterday we heard about what makes people with autism unique, today we learn what it takes to help children with autism learn at school. Bethany Ulrick has more. If a child is taking longer than usual to meet developmental milestones, like crawling or speaking, it's recommended to get them tested. As they grow up, they may be lagging behind in more areas compared to their peers. "The three big deficits that you're going to see in autism [...]

Ready, set, adult: Students compete in Delaware school’s ‘life skills’ Olympics

Sometimes it's hard to know if you're ready for something until you just do it. Take "adulting" for instance. To prepare for the inevitable, young people go to schools for academic instruction. They get tested on what they learn in the classroom, but life as an adult takes more than academics. Students also need social and job skills. But it's important to realize those portrayals don't apply to everyone, and individuals with autism can be anywhere from nonverbal to highly talented members of society. "People get that picture and then they overgeneralize and assume that that's what autism is when in reality we know [...]

San Diego Moms: Tips for Teaching Inclusive Play During Autism Awareness Month

A few weeks ago, my son’s classmate taught him how to “play Spiderman.” The conversation began when the classmate told his mother that my son didn’t know how to play the game. In response, the mother told her son she should teach him how to play by showing him what he could do. The classmate went to school the next day and did exactly that during recess. The response? My son came home excited to show me how he played Spiderman. Little does the classmate know my son is on the spectrum, and has difficulty understanding certain social cues. The [...]
