High Road School of Santa Rosa recently wrapped up its third annual flower drive in support of the HER Foundation of Northwest Florida. The organization provides housing and services to homeless women veterans or those endanger of becoming homeless.

For just $1, students purchased flower pots that were donated to the foundation. They also wrote heartfelt thank you notes for the veterans.

“The students feel proud to contribute and they really want to understand the ‘why’ before they give,” said Nellie Mihas, support services coordinator. “The thank you cards weren’t generic. Our students asked questions, wanted to know about the cause, and put real thought into what they wrote. Some have military family members and truly understand the meaning of service. Their compassion always amazes me.”

Barbara Francis of the HER Foundation visited campus to thank the students personally and brought along sweet treats for everyone.

In a touching letter to staff and students, she wrote, “Every year, your school’s kindness touches our hearts – but this year, the warmth of thoughtfulness felt especially meaningful. The heartfelt cards brought smiles to faces that often carry heavy burdens, and the flowers brightened not only their rooms but our spirits. Your generosity reminds our residents that they are seen, valued, and supported.”

Events like this remind the school community of the power of compassion and service.

“The students feel proud to contribute and they really want to understand the ‘why’ before they give.”
