Excel Academy of Englewood, part of the Chicago Public Schools’ Options Network, recently welcomed Illinois State Senator Willie Preston for a campus tour. The school, located within the 16th District, is near the Southwest side of Chicago – the community where Senator Preston was born, raised and now represents.

Senator Preston’s visit was an opportunity to see the school firsthand, guided by Excel Englewood Bull student government members: Secretary Ka’rianna Johnson, Vice President Tashay, and Treasurer Myla Harris. The student leaders shared their personal experiences and perspectives with the Senator as they toured the building.

During the visit, the Senator spoke with Associate School Director Bryson Lenon and Regional Director Dr. Anthony Haley Jr. about workforce development and career technical education opportunities at Excel Englewood.

He learned about the many programs available to students, including culinary arts, the P.O.U.R. Me Project (arts), music engineering, CNA certification, EMR training, and the Illinois Youth Investment Program, which provides student job placement opportunities.

Senator Preston also shared insights on upcoming initiatives and explored potential partnerships between Excel Englewood and other high schools in the 16th District. These collaborations could provide students with valuable resources to gain skills and trades that will benefit their future careers and overall lives.

Students were excited to meet Senator Preston, a leader from their own neighborhood who now serves their community and the state of Illinois. His visit left a lasting impact, inspiring them to see the possibilities for their own futures in leadership, public service, and skilled trades.
