Hassaanah Chandler’s Path to Nursing
At just 17 years old, Hassaanah Chandler is already making incredible strides toward her future. A recent graduate from Excel Academy Central, she earned an impressive scholarship to attend the University of Mount Saint Vincent in New York City, where she will pursue a degree in nursing. Her journey is one of determination and a passion to help others.
Having attended multiple high schools, Chandler discovered Excel Central in February 2024 through social media and thought it might provide the type of environment where she could finally thrive. At Excel, she quickly found a supportive environment that helped her focus on her academic and career goals.
With guidance from Ms. Kelly and Mr. Trapani, she explored her post-secondary options, applied to three colleges, and ultimately chose Mount Saint Vincent for its inclusive community and strong academic programs.
Her hard work paid off – she received multiple merit-based scholarships, including the Dean’s Merit Scholarship and a Resident Scholarship, totaling $120,000 over four years. While she will need to repay part of her housing assistance, these awards significantly ease the financial burden of college.
A Passion for Healthcare and Helping Others
Initially aspiring to become a doctor, Chandler’s interest in nurse anesthesia was sparked by a high school seminar. She realized that nursing would allow her to make a direct impact while providing a pathway to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
“A lot of people in my family struggle with health issues,” she shared. “I always wanted to work in healthcare to help people and bring them comfort and joy.”
She credits her high school social science and African-American history teacher, Ms. Stahl, for inspiring her and writing a strong recommendation letter.
Excel’s structured post-secondary planning played a crucial role in her success. “I always knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t know how to apply. Having it as a graduation requirement made it easier to navigate the process,” she said.
Looking Ahead to a Bright Future
Reflecting on her time at Excel, she encourages other students to consider the school, praising the supportive teachers and personalized guidance.
“It was one of the best decisions I made,” she said. “The teachers really care about you, even on a personal level.”
Originally from South Philadelphia, Chandler is excited for the next chapter of her life. Before starting college in August, she looks forward to traveling, spending time with family, and celebrating her accomplishments. While balancing school and her job at McDonald’s, she has proven that hard work and perseverance lead to success.
Congratulations, Hassaanah! We can’t wait to see all that you accomplish.
