What Does “Twice-Exceptional” Mean? 

Twice-exceptionality refers to students who exhibit exceptional abilities in certain areas—such as a high IQ, or outstanding talents in the arts or mechanics—while simultaneously struggling with learning disabilities, sensory needs, or social-emotional challenges. While these students might be seen as gifted in one domain, their struggles in another often go unnoticed or misunderstood, especially in traditional educational settings. Unfortunately, these labels, though necessary for educational support, can have lasting effects on a student’s academic and personal life.

Labeling students with terms such as “gifted” or “learning disabled” is essential for ensuring they receive the support and resources they need. Labels provide clarity and promote communication among caregivers, educators, and specialists.
