When Jacob became a student at High Road School in Danielson, CT, his mother, Tiffany, hoped the school could help with Jacob’s behavior and academics. After witnessing a remarkable turnaround in Jacob, it’s safe to say that this school has exceeded Tiffany’s expectations.

Early Struggles

After kindergarten, Jacob began to exhibit troubling behaviors. According to Tiffany, Jacob simply wanted no part of schoolwork, and he figured out an effective way to avoid it. Jacob became combative and aggressive – often resulting in him being sent home from school. “Jacob knew the end result [of his behaviors] and wanted that to happen on purpose,” said Tiffany. She added, “It was devastating to see my child losing out on learning.”

Besides impacting his ability to learn, Jacob’s behavior had devastating consequences at home. During this time, there was already plenty of stress for the family—Tiffany was undergoing cancer treatment. “There were days I had to be in [the hospital] for surgery, and the school would call to tell me I had to come get him,” said Tiffany.

“I felt alone and upset,” Tiffany shared, because she knew Jacob needed “a school that really understood how to help him stop focusing on the self-destructive behaviors.”

High Road School to the Rescue

Tiffany witnessed incredible changes in Jacob and his behaviors after enrolling in High Road School. “I give complete credit to the High Road program and their ability to listen to a parent and to understand a student’s behaviors,” she said. “They were able to read my son like a book and tailor a program to his needs—one that got him back into the school setting and learning.”

Tiffany loves that Jacob is learning to recognize his emotions and use words instead of violence to communicate. She also appreciates that Jacob is retaining what he’s learning at school and applying it to real-life situations. “I see the independence the school is helping him achieve,” Tiffany said. “I also see Jacob using problem-solving skills at home that he hadn’t used before.”

Having Her Son Back

At home, Jacob’s behavior is much improved. He calms down more easily using techniques he learned at High Road School. And he loves doing homework! “I’ve seen him growing in so many ways,” explains Tiffany. “We got our son back!”

Tiffany has seen how High Road School has helped Jacob, and she wants other parents and children in similar situations to experience the same success she and Jacob have. “The school is awesome at listening to you and your child,” she said. “They are focused on helping your child learn skills they’ll use in life while balancing that with book learning. This program has helped my child enjoy learning again and given him a safe place to express his emotions.” And that is all any parent can ask of their child’s school.

Jacob’s Impact

Jacob is such a pleasure to have in school. He is a hard-working, determined, caring young man with a heart of gold.  Jacob has a strong desire to work hard and always tries his best. In the last four months Jacob has earned Honor Roll, Student of the Month and Gold status, High Road School’s highest achievement.

Jacob is a joy to have in class and he has made significant gains in both reading and math.

Jacob is inquisitive, determined and a pleasure to have around.  He has shown remarkable growth in the two short years I have known him. Jacob went from hiding under his cubby to being an outgoing and independent student with an amazing sense of humor.  Jacob is the one of many such success stories we have seen at High Road Schools and will continue to see with supports from our dedicated and caring staff, positive behavior intervention strategies, and specialized programming.

This program has helped my child enjoy learning again and given him a safe place to express his emotions. I give complete credit to the High Road program and their ability to listen to a parent and to understand a student’s behaviors.
