A Special Evening at Prom

When Caden arrived at his district’s senior prom in a black tuxedo, bow tie, sunglasses, and headphones, it was clear he was ready for a night to remember.

The 12th-grade student in Capital Academy’s AS program attended prom after meeting important behavior and attendance goals. Goals he had worked toward with support from his family and school team. Returning to a district event and celebrating alongside peers was something Caden had hoped to do because he wanted to feel included and be part of the experience.

Student Growth Leads to a Memorable Prom Experience

In the weeks leading up to prom, staff helped Caden prepare by reinforcing social skills, conflict resolution, and coping strategies for overstimulating situations. He practiced taking deep breaths, communicating when he needed space, and politely responding to non-preferred interactions.

Caden was excited for the event and eager to wear his formal clothes. Once he arrived, he especially enjoyed the music and dancing.

Reflecting on Years of Progress

Staff members say the evening reflected how much growth Caden has demonstrated since joining Capital Academy in eighth grade.

When he first enrolled, Caden struggled with aggression, selective verbal communication, and defiant behaviors. Over time, he learned to better express when he was upset, take time to cool down, and rely on coping strategies to manage frustration. Today, staff describe a student who works hard to maintain positive peer relationships, stay flexible during challenging moments, and communicate respectfully.

“Watching Caden grow over the years has been incredibly rewarding for our team,” said Jen Weary, director of special education at Capital Academy. “He has worked hard to develop coping skills, strengthen relationships, and meet the goals he set for himself. Seeing him confidently attend prom and enjoy the experience alongside his peers was a proud moment for everyone who has supported him along the way.”

Celebrating Confidence and Milestones

Mr. Falcone, one of Caden’s teachers, has also witnessed that progress firsthand.

“Caden has shown us strengths when sticking to a routine. He is very consistent and likes predictability,” he said. “He is very motivated to do well and has made so much growth in writing full sentences and in math class. I’m incredibly proud of his growth.”

As Caden and his family think about the future, they hope he will continue attending Capital Academy through age 21. For now, staff and loved ones are celebrating an important milestone and the progress that made it possible.
