Building Towers Through Hands-On Learning

At Capital Academy, students in third through fifth grade in Ms. Dukes’ class recently took on a hands-on engineering challenge focused on tower construction and structural balance.

Working in small groups, they used a limited set of materials to design and build the tallest tower possible. The constraints pushed them to think strategically, test ideas, and make decisions as a team.

Learning Through Trial and Error

Many groups faced setbacks when their structures collapsed. Students revised their designs, identified what was not working, and tried new approaches. These moments reinforced key concepts like stability, balance, and structural design.

Teamwork Problem-Solving Activity in Action

The challenge also highlighted strong collaboration. Students shared responsibilities, exchanged ideas, and supported one another throughout the process. Each group approached the task differently, resulting in a range of creative tower designs.

By the end of the activity, students built unique structures and strengthened their understanding of basic engineering concepts. They also practiced persistence and learned how to work through challenges together.
