Achieve Academy of Philadelphia students recently heard directly from Holocaust survivor George Marcus, who visited campus as part of the school’s World History curriculum.

Middle school students, along with high school students enrolled in World History, studied the Holocaust, and the unit culminated in Marcus’ visit, giving them a rare opportunity to connect their learning to a firsthand account.

Students Engage During Holocaust Survivor Visit

During the presentation, students listened closely as Marcus shared his personal experiences. Many asked thoughtful questions that connected historical events to issues facing society today.

“This was an important opportunity for our students to hear history directly from someone who lived it,” said Gregory McCleary, executive director, Achieve Academy. “Experiences like this deepen understanding in ways a textbook cannot.”

The visit encouraged reflection and discussion as students considered history’s impact on the present. In follow-up conversations, many expressed a deeper sense of empathy and a greater appreciation for the importance of remembering the past.

Staff supported the experience by helping students prepare for the visit and guiding post-presentation discussions in the classroom.

A Meaningful Experience Made Possible Through Partnership

Achieve Academy extends its gratitude to Marcus for sharing his story and to the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center for making the visit possible.

McCleary said he looks forward to offering more opportunities that help students connect with history in meaningful ways.
