Students Gather for a Day of Recreation and Connection

Students and staff from the Excel, Achieve, and Continuation Academies in Philadelphia recently came together for their annual May Day celebration, a longstanding tradition that marks the close of another school year.

Held on May 22 at the Lemon Hill Picnic Area in Fairmount Park, the event brought hundreds of students, educators, and guests together for a day of recreation and fun in the fresh air. Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including basketball, baseball, a zip line, a climbing wall, and bounce houses.

A May Day Celebration Filled With Fun and Achievement

A DJ provided music throughout the day, helping keep the energy high, while students enjoyed a catered lunch and time to relax and celebrate their accomplishments.

The event also welcomed representatives from the School District of Philadelphia Opportunity Network, which provides non-traditional and alternative educational options for out-of-school youth and students who are at significant risk of dropping out.

May Day remains a highlight of the school year, giving students from across the Excel, Achieve, and Continuation Academies an opportunity to celebrate the progress they have made throughout the year.

Supporting Student Success Beyond the Classroom

Excel Academies of Philadelphia offers students a different path through high school. The small, supportive environment focuses on academic success, emotional wellness, and social growth. Available to students ages 15-21, the tuition-free program offers an accelerated path to graduation. Students can earn up to 10 credits per year and graduate in 2.5 years or less.

The Achieve and Continuation Academies help students get back on track. The transitional programs serve students who’ve faced behavior challenges in a traditional school environment. As a result, students build the skills and confidence needed to return to their home school and thrive. The structured, supportive environment focuses on academics, behavior, and personal growth.
