When Jason Rodriguez joined High Road School of Wallingford nearly four years ago, he brought with him a personal understanding of what it means to support a child with special needs.

Rodriguez and his wife helped raise a young family member with special needs. That experience stayed with Rodriguez and ultimately influenced his decision to work with students who need additional support.

Staff Spotlight: A Career Shaped by Patience

He began at High Road as a behavior aide before moving into his current role as a teacher’s assistant. Rodriguez said one of his biggest areas of growth has been patience.

“I’ve learned that you never want to assume or judge because you never know what someone is dealing with outside of what you see,” he said. “I’m still learning every day, even as an adult, about myself and about the kids.”

That perspective shapes how Rodriguez approaches students across High Road’s primary, middle, and high school programs. He has learned that age alone says little about what a student may need from him on a given day. Instead, he adjusts his approach based on the individual student and how that student learns.

Celebrating Meaningful Student Breakthroughs

For Rodriguez, some of the most rewarding moments come when a student makes progress in an area that has been difficult.

“It’s when we have a breakthrough,” he said. “You see a student struggling with something socially or academically and then they comprehend it.”

Sometimes those breakthroughs happen outside academics. Rodriguez recalled working with a student who struggled with personal hygiene, which was beginning to affect his interactions with peers. Over time, the student’s hygiene improved and they began engaging more on a social level and developing relationships with peers.

Rodriguez said being straightforward with students is an important part of his approach.

“I try not to sugarcoat things,” he said. “They know I’m going to be honest. The answer they get may not be the one they want to hear, but they know Mr. Rodriguez will be honest.”

Building Connections Beyond the Classroom

His connections with students also extend beyond the classroom. Last school year, a game day led Rodriguez to start a Chess Club after he pulled out a chessboard and discovered that one student knew how to play. Other students gathered around to watch and soon wanted to learn themselves.

“It just snowballed from there,” Rodriguez said.

The club now includes students from the high school and primary programs, and Rodriguez hopes to expand it and eventually hold a tournament.

Supporting Students and Colleagues at High Road

His influence reaches his colleagues as well. Younger staff members often turn to Rodriguez for guidance, something he finds humbling after fewer than four years at the school. He shares lessons he has picked up along the way and tries to offer the kind of support that has helped him succeed.

For Rodriguez, that supportive culture starts with the school’s leadership.

“I appreciate strong leadership and knowing I can go to them for an answer,” he said. “That trickles down at our school.”

Nearly four years after first walking into High Road School of Wallingford, Rodriguez continues to learn alongside the students he supports. Whether he is helping a student work through a challenge, teaching someone how to play chess, or offering advice to a colleague, he has found his place simply by being Mr. Rodriguez.

High Road School of Wallingford provides individualized academic and behavioral support for students in a structured learning environment. The school focuses on helping students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
