High Road School of York Students Honor 9/11

Students at High Road School of York recently took part in meaningful activities to remember the events of September 11, 2001. Through classroom learning, community service, and visits with local first responders, students reflected on the importance of service, sacrifice, and community.
Students Learn About September 11
High school students attended a special presentation by classmate Izzy O., who recently visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Izzy shared what he learned during his visit and presented information about the events of September 11 to his classmates.
His presentation gave students an opportunity to ask questions and participate in thoughtful discussion. It also helped them better understand the significance of September 11 in United States history. As part of the schoolwide remembrance, students also watched short educational films about September 11. The films honored the lives lost and helped students better understand the events of that day.
Turning Remembrance Into Service
Students across the school participated in a service project by writing thank-you letters to local firefighters and police officers. The letters gave students an opportunity to express appreciation for the first responders who continue to serve their communities every day.
Students then personally delivered their letters to Alliance Fire Rescue in Red Lion, Pennsylvania, and the York County Regional Police Department in York Township.
Hands-On Learning With Local First Responders
During their visit to Alliance Fire Rescue, students toured the station and learned about firefighting equipment, emergency response, and what a typical day can look like for firefighters.
Students explored the fire trucks, learned how different pieces of equipment operate, and even had the opportunity to try on firefighting gear. The hands-on experience helped connect classroom learning with the important work first responders perform in the community.
At the York County Regional Police Department, students met with a police officer, asked questions, and personally delivered their thank-you letters as a gesture of gratitude and respect.
Through these experiences, students honored 9/11 while learning more about an important moment in American history and recognizing the first responders who continue to serve their communities.
