High Road School of Nashville Students Get Moving at Southeast Community Center

Students from High Road School of Nashville recently left the classroom and got moving during visits to the Southeast Community Center.
Approximately 10 middle and high school students participated in each visit. They took part in group exercises, stretching, relay races, basketball, and other activities. Physical education teachers Mr. Myers and Ms. Taylor led students through stretches and relay drills, giving them plenty of opportunities to move while practicing teamwork and sportsmanship.
Building Teamwork Through Physical Activity
The outings also gave students a chance to spend time together in a community setting. Along the way, they practiced communication, following directions, and encouraging their peers.
“What stood out to me was seeing the students encourage each other,” said Mr. Garth. “They were working together, laughing and competing, but they were also supporting one another. It was great seeing those relationships develop outside of class.”
Connecting Students With Community Resources
The visits are part of High Road School of Nashville’s partnership with the Southeast Community Center. Director Thomas Floyd welcomed the students and provided access to the facility and its recreational spaces.
In addition to introducing students to a resource available in their community, Garth said outings like these provide another setting for students to practice skills they are developing at school.
“We want our students to have opportunities to be active, interact with others and become comfortable using resources in their community,” Garth said. “The Southeast Community Center gives them a place to do all of those things.”
High Road School of Nashville provides individualized academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support for students in a structured learning environment. Through classroom instruction and opportunities in the community, students build skills they can use at school and beyond.
