Students at High Road School of Nashville traded the classroom for community job sites recently as they kicked off the school’s Work-Based Learning Program with hands-on experience at Kroger and Habitat for Humanity.

Accompanied by Transition Coordinator Mr. Garth, students completed service hours while taking on tasks in workplaces throughout the local community. The experience gave them opportunities to practice life? skills including following directions, communicating with supervisors and peers, working as a team, and completing assigned responsibilities.

Work-Based Learning in the Community

At Habitat for Humanity ReStore, students assisted with projects while learning about job expectations and the importance of dependability and initiative.

“The group of students did a fabulous job and exceeded our expectations,” said Ms. Kate, volunteer coordinator at Habitat for Humanity.

Students working at Kroger also put their skills into practice while supporting employees at the store.

“The young ladies worked hard and were enthusiastic about helping,” said Mr. Adam, supervisor at Kroger.

Building Skills for Future Employment

The Work-Based Learning Program is designed to give students practical experience as they prepare for employment after high school. In addition to developing workplace skills, students can document their service hours and job-site experiences on their resumes and begin building professional portfolios.

By participating in continued opportunities, students will have the chance to take on new responsibilities, strengthen their independence, and gain experience they can carry into future jobs.

Supporting Student Growth and Independence

Designed to support students’ academic, social, and behavioral growth, High Road School of Nashville provides individualized instruction in small, structured classrooms. Through evidence-based instruction, specialized services, and opportunities such as work-based learning, the school helps students build the skills, confidence, and independence they need for success in school, the workplace and beyond.
