Friday Yoga Brings Calm, Movement and Choice to High Road School of Anne Arundel County

Students at High Road School of Anne Arundel County have a new way to unwind, recharge, and practice self-regulation as part of their Friday routine.
The school recently introduced yoga, breathwork, and meditation sessions led by Program Director Tara Chander, who is also a certified yoga instructor. The activity gives students an opportunity to slow down, move intentionally, and focus on their well-being in an engaging group setting.
Giving Students a Choice
The Friday yoga sessions are available to students across all steps of the CASE model. Students who earn Study Hall can choose between participating in Study Hall or joining the yoga session.
Providing that choice allows students to consider what will best support them at the end of the week while encouraging independence and self-awareness.
A Positive First Session
The school’s first yoga session quickly became a hit with students.
Tara incorporated yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation into a story-based format designed to keep students engaged throughout the experience. Students participated in stretches and poses using mats and yoga blocks while following along as a group.
One student summed up the experience afterward, saying, “I feel GREAT after that, Ms. Tara!”
Staff also noticed a greater sense of calm and relaxation among students following the session.
Supporting Wellness and Self-Regulation
The new activity gives students another opportunity to practice skills connected to focus, emotional regulation, and overall wellness while participating in something enjoyable.
Based on the enthusiastic response to the first session, High Road School of Anne Arundel County plans to continue incorporating yoga into its Friday programming.
