Students Learn Earth Day Responsibility Hands-On

Learning to Care for the Earth
At High Road School of Wright City, lessons about responsibility recently took root in a hands-on way. Students in the Spring 1 and Spark 6 classes stepped outside the classroom for Earth Day to learn how small actions can make a big difference for the environment and community.
Students began the lesson by learning about the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle, and discussing how small, everyday actions can make a positive impact. They explored how reusing materials, recycling properly, and respecting plants and animals contribute to environmental responsibility.
Rather than simply talking about environmental care, students connected responsibility to real-life choices. They learned that accountability means following through on actions that support their school and the world around them.
Hands-On Projects That Reinforced Responsibility
After learning about the three R’s, students put those lessons into action through two hands-on projects. They planted flowers to brighten the school’s outdoor space and created bird feeders using reused materials to support local wildlife. The activities encouraged creativity and collaboration.
“By planting flowers and making bird feeders, students practiced teamwork, responsibility, and environmental care in a meaningful and memorable way,” said Meaghan Bell, IEP coordinator at High Road School of Wright City.
The experience helped students connect classroom learning to real-world action while building pride in caring for their school and environment.
