April is World Autism Month, and at B.E.S.T. Academy, staff marked the occasion by creating inclusive, student-centered experiences that reflect how each student communicates. As part of the celebration, students and staff took part in an Autism Awareness Color Walk.

A Sensory-Rich Experience Filled With Joy

Students participated in a guided walk through an obstacle course designed as a sensory-rich experience. Along the way, they were showered with a rainbow of colors, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and laughter. The fun event also highlighted a core value of the school: every student deserves to be heard.

Communication and Choice at the Center

What made the Color Walk especially powerful was the emphasis on communication and choice. Staff supported students in expressing their preferences in whatever way worked best for them, whether through their voice, an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device, or sign language. Working with a speech-language pathologist, they could request “more color,” “less color,” or “no color,” giving them an active role in shaping their experience.

Team Collaboration Supports Every Student

The event also reflected strong collaboration across teams. Related services staff worked alongside classroom staff to support students. The physical therapy team helped students navigate elements of the course, such as walking across “river rocks” and jumping through a ladder, building confidence and motor skills. The occupational therapy team designed the obstacle course and provided real-time coaching and support. A BCBA offered encouragement and guidance to those needing additional support to participate.

Autism Awareness Color Walk in Action

This intentional collaboration ensured every student could participate in a way that felt safe, supported, and joyful. It was a powerful reminder that when student voice is centered, and teams work together across disciplines, inclusive experiences are created.

“The color walk was a reflection of our commitment to supporting autonomy, respecting sensory needs, and creating spaces where all students can thrive,” said Jennifer Johnson, executive director. B.E.S.T. Academy. “Seeing our students advocate for themselves, engage with peers, and embrace the moment in their own unique ways was awesome.”

At B.E.S.T. Academy, World Autism Month is about action, understanding, and celebration. The walk captured all of that in the most colorful way possible.
