Student Spotlight BEST Academy: Luis’s Journey

Luis joined B.E.S.T. Academy in the summer of 2019 as a third grader, needing support to navigate many parts of the school day. While math quickly became a favorite subject, reading and writing often brought challenges and frustration.

Individualized Support and Growth

From the very beginning, the BEST Academy team designed an individualized program to highlight his strengths and provide meaningful support in areas of need. Through hands-on learning, consistent routines, and an individualized reinforcement system, Luis learned to communicate his frustrations appropriately and use coping strategies to stay engaged.

Thriving in the PALS Classroom

As Luis’ confidence grew, he began to thrive academically and socially. Transitioning into the newly developed PALS classroom, he flourished in the structured, supportive environment. Luis now participates enthusiastically in classroom rotations, communicates openly with staff, and demonstrates strong self-advocacy skills, including suggesting ideas for his own reinforcement system.

Academic Progress in Math

Most recently, his progress has been especially clear in math, where he now performs at grade level. Luis continues to model B.E.S.T. Academy’s CASE values, consistently earning BEAR Bucks and serving as a positive example for his peers.
