Arielle’s Path to High School Graduation

For Arielle Johnson, graduating from high school once felt out of reach. Now a senior at Excel Academy Central, she is on track to earn her diploma this spring and already has her sights set on what comes next.
Johnson came to Excel last year behind in credits and needing a different approach to school. As the mother of a young child, she was also balancing responsibilities outside the classroom and was looking for a school where she could catch up academically and still graduate on time.
A Path Toward High School Graduation
Excel Academy Central staff recognize that students may come to school with circumstances that can make a traditional high school experience difficult. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, team members work with each student to understand what they need to get back on track, make up credits, and continue progressing toward graduation.
She said her teachers motivate her to come to school and have taken the time to get to know her personally.
“At other schools, you’re more just a number,” Johnson said. “Here, they know you by name. You have relationships with the staff and can talk to them.”
Those relationships have helped change how Johnson feels about school. She remembers once thinking she hated it. “Now I love it,” she said.
Building Confidence and Determination
She is also proud that graduation is around the corner.
“It’s so exciting to see what my life is going to be like and see how adulthood is.”
She points to staff members, including Ms. Becca, who has offered encouragement when Johnson comes to school tired after a long night with her daughter. Those conversations have helped Johnson feel understood as both a student and a young mother.
Johnson sees changes in herself, too. She describes herself as more determined and persistent than when she first arrived at Excel. Getting up at 6 a.m., arriving at school on time, and staying consistent are accomplishments she once thought would be difficult to sustain.
“I just love that for myself,” she said. “I learned to discipline myself.” She also serves on student government and takes pride in being an Eagle.
Looking Ahead to Life After Graduation
While earning her diploma is the immediate goal, Johnson is already thinking beyond graduation. She plans to continue her education and today hopes to become a lawyer.
Johnson also credits the Teen Elect program with providing support and guidance as she balances school and motherhood. The program has given her another source of encouragement as she gets closer to graduation.
Her advice to other students who may be behind or unsure whether they can graduate reflects what she has learned during her own time at Excel.
“It’s all about you and if you want to graduate,” she said. “If you put your mind to it, you can do it. You have the support. Even if you’re going through something, we’re all human. Make sure you have people who can support you.”
