Students at High Road School of Fairfield County put their creativity on display in celebration of International Dot Day, using art and literacy to explore self-expression and the idea that everyone can make their own mark.

Exploring Creativity Through International Dot Day

The activity began with a read-aloud of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a story about a student who discovers her creative potential after being encouraged to simply make a mark and see where it takes her. Students discussed the story’s themes of perseverance, confidence, and believing in their own abilities before creating dots of their own.

With markers, paint, and tons of imagination, students designed dots that reflected their individual styles. Some experimented with bold colors and patterns, while others created more detailed designs. The finished artwork looked different from student to student, which was exactly the point.

Creativity Across Grade Levels

The activity also proved that creativity has no age limit, with students across grade levels taking part.

“Even our high school students enjoyed being able to express themselves through their dot,” said Ms. Marcelin, program lead.

International Dot Day gave students a chance to connect what they read with a hands-on activity while encouraging them to take creative risks and be proud of what they produced. From the first brushstroke or marker line to the finished designs, students had an opportunity to see how one small mark can become something entirely their own.
