Garden-to-Table Learning at NewHope Academy

Something smelled especially good at NewHope Academy recently, and the school garden had a lot to do with it.
During Cooking Thrills, students in Bruce and Belinda’s classes made Apple Cinnamon Zucchini Muffins using zucchini freshly picked from NewHope Academy’s own garden. The activity gave students a chance to see the garden-to-table process come full circle, taking something they helped grow and turning it into something they could prepare, bake, and enjoy.
The cooking activity built naturally on the work students had already put into the garden. After spending time planting, tending, and caring for the growing space, students were able to use part of the harvest in a completely different setting and see how fresh produce can become an ingredient in a finished recipe.
Bringing the Garden Into the Kitchen
Preparing the muffins gave students hands-on experience with several practical cooking skills. They worked together to follow the recipe, measure ingredients, prepare the zucchini, and complete the steps needed to get the muffins into the oven.
Along the way, students were able to connect skills used in the garden with skills used in the kitchen. Growing the food was only one part of the experience. Cooking with it helped students better understand how ingredients can move from the garden into meals and recipes they recognize and enjoy.
As the muffins baked, the smell of apple and cinnamon filled the hallways and quickly caught the attention of others around the school.
Learning Through the Full Process
What made the activity especially meaningful was the connection between the different parts of the experience.
Students were not simply cooking with ingredients that had been purchased for the lesson. The zucchini had been grown right at NewHope Academy, giving students the opportunity to participate in a larger process that began well before they entered the kitchen.
The garden has already provided opportunities to practice horticulture, responsibility, teamwork, and patience. Bringing the harvest into Cooking Thrills added another layer by giving students experience with recipe preparation, measuring, kitchen skills, and working together toward a finished product.
That connection helps turn a single activity into a broader learning experience, with students able to see how their earlier work contributed directly to what they were making that day.
A Sweet Finish to the Harvest
The freshly picked zucchini helped create moist Apple Cinnamon Zucchini Muffins and gave students another way to enjoy something they helped produce.
More importantly, the activity allowed students to experience the satisfaction of taking a project through multiple stages, beginning in the garden and eventually ending with something warm coming out of the oven.
It was a simple recipe with a much bigger story behind it, and judging by the aroma filling the school, it was difficult for anyone nearby not to notice.
