A Student’s Journey Beyond Sierra School of Peoria

Transitioning Into Adulthood
Tobi, a Sierra School of Peoria graduate, recently reached out to share a life update, offering a firsthand look at how the skills and supports gained at Sierra continue to shape their transition into adulthood.
Today, Tobi reports improved mental health, a greater sense of safety, and a consistent commitment to using healthier coping strategies. While some challenges remain, Tobi is actively engaging in care, advocating for themselves and navigating real-world responsibilities such as scheduling medical appointments, managing benefits, and handling daily living tasks.
A Sierra School Graduate Reflects on Life After Graduation
A core lesson that continues guiding Tobi is the ability to build and maintain healthy connections. During their time at Sierra, Tobi learned it was safe to let others in and form meaningful friendships, something that continues to shape how they interact with others today. Since graduating, they have built positive, supportive relationships with their boyfriend and friends, reinforcing the importance of connection in their life.
Learning Healthy Coping Strategies
Tobi also shared that while they still face difficult moments, they now rely on healthier coping tools learned at Sierra. Skills such as grounding, reflection, and rational thinking help them navigate overwhelming emotions. In those moments, Tobi leans on both learned strategies and trusted support systems to redirect negative thoughts in more positive and constructive ways.
Building Confidence Through Community Experiences
Growth has also shown up in handling everyday responsibilities and “adulting” tasks, particularly communication and community engagement. Volunteering at St. Mary’s Food Bank gave Tobi the opportunity to hear others’ stories and deepen their connection to the community. That experience strengthened their confidence, ability to relate to others, and navigate opportunities in daily life.
When things feel especially hard, Tobi reminds themselves that difficult moments are temporary. Maintaining a realistic yet hopeful mindset helps them move forward with the understanding that improvement is possible with time and effort.
Advice for Current Sierra Students
Reflecting on their experience, Tobi shared advice for current Sierra students: let people help you. While opening up can feel uncomfortable or risky, allowing staff to truly get to know you can make a meaningful difference. In Tobi’s experience, being open led to some of the most supportive and important relationships in their life.
“Getting older isn’t always easy, and life brings new challenges that can feel overwhelming,” Tobi said. “But the skills I learned at Sierra stayed with me. They helped me build real connections and push through moments I once believed I would never overcome. Looking back, I can see how far I’ve come, and it reminds me that growth is possible, even when it feels hard.”
Lasting Skills Beyond Graduation
“We want students to leave here with tools they can rely on long after they graduate,” said Clark Crace, regional director, Sierra Schools of Central Arizona. “When we hear from a former student who is applying those skills in real, meaningful ways, it reinforces why this work matters.”
