High Road School of York Autism Awareness Week

A Week of Learning and Creativity
High Road School of York students meaningfully participated in Autism Awareness activities throughout the week, helping to promote understanding, acceptance, and celebration of neurodiversity. The experience allowed students to recognize that every individual has unique strengths, qualities, and ways of thinking. Thinking that should be valued and respected.
Daily Activities That Highlight Neurodiversity
On Monday, students celebrated neurodiversity by exploring the individual characteristics that make each person unique.
On Tuesday, they worked together in small groups to create an “All Kinds of Minds” hallway display using the infinity symbol, representing the infinite range of neurological differences, neurodivergent pride, and equality.
Wednesday, students created windsocks and ended the day by watching films focused on Autism, encouraging reflection and learning. Students also had the opportunity to wear blue, symbolizing calmness, acceptance, and support for individuals on the spectrum.
And on Thursday, they designed posters that highlighted diversity and inclusion. They stamped hearts to form flowers and added uplifting messages such as “accept, love, & understand.”
Finally, to conclude the week, students made sensory bottles in an activity led by Cheyanne, a senior and Norseman at High Road.
Building a Community of Inclusion and Respect
These activities were important because they encouraged creativity, collaboration, and empathy while reinforcing the message that differences should be embraced. Through their participation, High Road students helped foster a school community built on awareness, inclusion, and respect for all.
