Celebrating Black History Month at High Road School of Wright City

High Road School of Wright City recently hosted a schoolwide event in honor of Black History Month. Special education teachers Casey Hutchison and Kristi Hoffman organized the program, bringing together students and staff from all Spring, BLOOM, and Spark classrooms.

Representation and Innovation During Black History Month

Dr. Diana Collins, a nurse practitioner, podcaster, actress, and educator, delivered a virtual presentation on the importance of representation and the contributions of African American inventors throughout history.
Collins drew from her own career to share insights about navigating professional spaces as a Black woman. She emphasized how visibility and leadership influence how young people see themselves and their futures.

Student Engagement and Reflection

Students actively participated from their classrooms while teachers facilitated discussion and reflection. Educators reported that students expressed surprise at how many everyday inventions were created or improved by African American innovators, contributions that the traditional curriculum often overlooks.

“This event gave our students the opportunity to see themselves reflected in leadership, innovation, and excellence,” said Hutchison, a 2025 Teacher of the Year recipient at the campus level. “Dr. Collins helped our entire school community recognize that African American contributions are deeply woven into our everyday lives. More importantly, she reminded our students that their potential is limitless.”

The Lasting Impact of Black History Month

Collins encouraged students to continue learning beyond February and to recognize the value of honoring diverse voices throughout the year. The event celebrated Black excellence and innovation while reinforcing the power of education to inspire change.
The special event left students and staff with a deeper appreciation for history and a positive look toward the future.
