Women’s History Month School Activities at High Road

Students in the middle school Spark classroom at High Road of Wright City marked Women’s History Month with a lesson focused on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

In Casey Hutchinson and Ashley Tiesing’s classroom, students watched the film adaptation of the best-selling book and learned about Henrietta Lacks, whose cells, known as HeLa cells, became a critical tool in medical research. Her cells contributed to breakthroughs, including the development of the polio vaccine, cancer research, and advancements in genetics. Her story raised awareness about ethical issues in medicine, especially the importance of informed consent and patient rights.

Exploring Ethics, Science, and Historical Impact

During the lesson, students examined the ethical, social, and historical themes presented in the film. Lacks’ story prompted discussions about medical ethics, informed consent, and the significant yet often overlooked role women, particularly women of color, have played in shaping history.

After the viewing, students completed comprehension questions designed to deepen
their understanding of both the scientific significance of HeLa cells and the personal human story behind them. The assignment encouraged students to reflect on the facts
presented, as well as the broader ethical questions raised in the movie.

Connecting Students to Meaningful History

“This experience was an opportunity for students to connect with history in a personal and meaningful way,” said Hutchinson. “By examining Henrietta Lacks’ legacy, our students gained a greater appreciation for the often-unseen contributions of women in science and beyond.”

Educators praised the students for their engagement, thoughtful responses, and
willingness to explore complex topics as they continue honoring and celebrating the
achievements of women.
