At Sierra School of Sacramento, learning continues throughout the summer with a combination of individualized instruction, consistent support, and activities students can look forward to.

Extended School Year Supports Continued Progress

Through the Extended School Year (ESY) program, students continue working toward their academic, behavioral and functional goals in a structured school environment. Designed for students whose IEP teams determine that continued instruction is needed, ESY helps students maintain progress, practice established routines and remain connected to learning during the summer months.

Summer School Activities Add Excitement to ESY

So far this summer, water day, movie day and an ice cream social added extra excitement to the program. The activities offered a change of pace while giving students chances to have fun with classmates, strengthen communication skills and build relationships with staff.

“These activities help create a positive environment where students are excited to participate,” said Director Quenice Davis. “They give students opportunities to connect with others, stay engaged and see school as a place they enjoy being.”

Building Communication, Cooperation and Independence

The events also reinforced skills students practice throughout the school day. Sharing an activity with peers can encourage cooperation and communication, while participating in a planned event helps students practice routines, transitions and independence.

By pairing continued instruction with engaging summer activities, Sierra School of Sacramento helped students maintain their skills and stay connected to their school community before returning in the fall.
