Student Art Mentorship Helps Bryan Build Confidence

When Bryan enrolled at High Road School of Hartford in 2018, he needed significant structure, support, and a safe place to rebuild his confidence as a learner after facing challenges at his previous school setting.

Since day one, the staff has worked closely with Bryan to create a consistent and encouraging environment. Over the years, he has made steady progress, becoming more focused, independent, and willing to take on academic challenges. His teachers say he has developed resilience, confidence, and strong self-advocacy skills, which now guide his approach to new opportunities.

A Student Art Mentorship Opportunity Takes Shape

A pivotal connection was made when a staff member purchased a piece of Bryan’s digital artwork, which he sells for CASE cash, part of a schoolwide Positive Behavior Support System used at the school.

After the staff member shared the work with her uncle, a local art studio owner, he was so impressed that he offered Bryan a chance to meet, receive mentorship, and develop new skills beyond digital art. Through transition planning and close collaboration, Bryan was able to connect his passion with a real-world work experience.

Building Real World Skills Through Student Art Mentorship

At the studio, Bryan assists with preparing materials, organizing supplies, supporting ongoing projects, and contributing his artistic ideas. His duties allow him to build essential workplace skills such as communication, time management, and teamwork while gaining valuable experience in a professional environment. Currently, he works at the studio one day a week to align with the shop’s hours. To further bolster his independence, his IEP now includes the goal of navigating the Hartford bus system, enabling him to eventually travel to the studio on his own.

Expanding Artistic Skills and Career Possibilities

Through the opportunity, Bryan is also learning traditional techniques such as sketching, shading, contour drawing, and cross-hatching. This expansion of his skill set helps him grow creatively and prepares him for broader artistic opportunities.

“Bryan’s journey is exactly why we do this work,” said Matthew Berardesca, High Road School of Hartford senior director. “Watching him grow from a student who needed significant assistance into a young adult confidently pursuing his passion has been incredible. His perseverance and creativity truly reflect what’s possible when students believe in themselves.”

“I cannot even fully express the change,” said his mother, Jahira Batista. “I do not know where to start. Bryan has become much more responsible and has matured so much since attending High Road.”

Batista shared that the school has helped him tremendously. “High Road has provided so much help, and I am very happy and truly appreciate all of the progress my son has made. I am incredibly proud of him,” she said.

Support From School and Family

Bryan described a typical day at the art gallery as structured and welcoming. He arrives, greets the owner, and shares any new artwork he has created. The owner helps set up supplies and provides Bryan with canvases, brushes, and technical tips before Bryan begins creating. This routine allows him to work independently while still receiving professional feedback.

“Bryan continues to surprise us, and that is because of the backing he receives at the school,” his mother added. “Now that he is an adult, he has been learning to manage independently with the school’s guidance, and I am very grateful.”

Through selling his artwork, Bryan has learned customer service and effective communication. He has gained an understanding of pricing strategies, including keeping prices affordable for peers while charging more for customized pieces. He also learned about saving and planning as preparation for starting his own business.

Bryan was motivated to apply for an LLC after designing a custom T-shirt for Mr. E’s class during Color Day. Following that experience, he began receiving requests from both staff and students for custom designs. These requests inspired him to pursue art as a career to support himself and his mother while doing work he truly enjoys.

“The school provided Bryan much help, from financial guidance and case management to transportation opportunities,” said Batista. “Bryan talks about this experience a lot, and he is very excited to have this background as he prepares for life after school.”

A Future Shaped by Student Art Mentorship

Looking ahead, Bryan’s goals include officially launching his business and applying to art school to further develop his skills.

“Bryan’s story truly embodies the mission of High Road School: to provide a supportive, individualized environment where students discover their strengths, build confidence, and prepare for meaningful futures,” said Berardesca.
