During Mental Health Awareness Month, the High Road School of Belvidere hosted a variety of activities to engage students and promote well-being.

One highlight was “Chalk it Up,” where students were encouraged to create uplifting messages, positive affirmations, and supportive artwork around campus using sidewalk chalk.

“This colorful display served as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the impact of positive thinking,” said Kristen (Schaffer) Heine, director High Road School of Belvidere.

Another popular event was a petting zoo. Interacting with animals is known to reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness, stimulating the release of “happy” hormones like oxytocin and serotonin.

“These events not only brought smiles to our students’ faces but also reinforced the importance of prioritizing mental health every day,” said Heine.
