There are two new kids on campus at Graham Academy’s Mayfield location – Claude and Fergus, a pair of goats already capturing the attention and hearts of students and staff.

New Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Students eagerly greeted Claude and Fergus and quickly embraced the opportunity to learn about them. Their arrival will provide new opportunities for hands-on learning and interaction throughout the school day.

Animal interactions can offer important benefits for children with autism, including potential gains in social communication, engagement and emotional regulation. Animals can also create calm, motivating opportunities for students to practice connection, responsibility and self-confidence.

A Generous Donation From S.A.F.E.

Claude and Fergus came to Mayfield through a generous donation from Supporting Autism and Families Everywhere, Inc. (S.A.F.E.), and its executive director, Malinda Knipfer. S.A.F.E.’s mission is to support and empower families affected by autism spectrum disorders. Additionally, work to identify services and activities specific to their needs. The organization’s goal is to provide a sense of inclusion and opportunity for those families within the local community and the ASD community.

“The school community appreciates S.A.F.E.’s kindness and continued support of students and families,” said Carol McGrane, regional director, The Graham Academy.

Claude and Fergus have quickly become a special part of the Mayfield community, and students look forward to spending more time learning alongside their newest campus companions.
