Excel Southwest Students Explore Obama Presidential Center

Students and staff from Excel Academy of Southwest recently toured the newly opened Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The visit gave students an opportunity to explore local history, civic engagement, and career possibilities close to home.
The center opened to the public earlier this year and serves as both a historical destination and community gathering place. Students were able to see firsthand the resources and experiences now available on Chicago’s South Side.

During the visit, students explored interactive exhibits highlighting neighborhood history and the role community leadership has played in shaping Chicago and beyond. They also learned about educational and career opportunities available through the center and surrounding community.
“This center is a resource and gathering place connected to Chicago’s South Side, a place where kids can discover educational and career possibilities,” said Juanita Hawkins, YS3 coordinator, behavioral specialist, and student government advisor.
Discovering Opportunities Close to Home
For Excel Southwest students, the trip was also a chance to consider the people, organizations, and resources around them. Those connections can open doors to new experiences and future opportunities.
“You don’t have to leave your community to find meaningful opportunities. You first have to know what your community has to offer,” Hawkins said.
The visit gave students another way to connect classroom learning with the city around them. It also encouraged them to continue exploring opportunities available throughout Chicago.
