Excel Academy Students Publish Slam Poetry Book

At Excel Academy South, a simple English 1 assignment recently transformed into a milestone for students. What began as an exploration of Octavia E. Butler’s novel, Parable of the Sower, evolved into a professionally published collection of slam poetry and essays titled Teen Talez.
How the Student Poetry Book Project Began
Under the leadership of Graduation Coordinator Nequetta Alford, students navigated the entire publishing process, from brainstorming and rough drafts to peer reviews and final edits.
The heart of the project focused on the art of slam poetry, a medium that allows for honest, personal expression. While students were initially slow to start, a step-by-step guide helped demystify the process, and soon the classroom was buzzing with creativity. The goal was for each student to write a piece that would motivate another teen.
Many began by discussing the challenges of their own lives, with each poem concluding with messages of hope and encouragement.
“It means that my goals are starting to feel like I’m accomplishing more,” said student Justice Geiger.
Students Celebrate Becoming Published Authors
The energy in the building shifted the moment the printed books arrived from Student Treasures Publishing. For most, this was the first time they had ever seen their work in a book. Students quickly flipped to their own pages, sharing their certificates with staff and smiling for photos.
“I’m proud to say that I am a published author,” said student Johnathan Morales, echoing the pride felt across the entire class.
Why Creating a Student Poetry Book Builds Confidence
This collaboration featured a dedicated team of authors and illustrators, including Justice G., Jyson J., Justin L., Gabrielle R., Zahirah A., Cassidy A., Michael D., Giana D., Khasir G., Johnathan M., India R., Jada A., Isaac G., Shaelyn B., and Ellin J. The book is further brought to life by illustrators Samia B., Gabriel R., and Justin L.
Special congratulations to Ahmed Donaldson, whose poem earned the Staff Favorite vote and a $20 gift card.
“I hope that this project becomes an annual tradition, as it provided a massive boost in student confidence and a tangible sense of accomplishment, said Alford. “By seeing their project come to life, students learned what it takes to become a voice of positivity for others.”
