Community-Based Learning in Action at Petco

Students at High Road School of Fairfield County recently took their learning beyond the classroom during a community outing to a local Petco, where they explored the store, learned about animal care, and put their social skills into practice.

During the visit, students observed a variety of animals, from fish and reptiles to guinea pigs and other small pets. They learned more about responsible pet ownership and had opportunities to ask questions and interact with the animals and store environment.

The outing also coincided with a pet adoption event, giving students the chance to meet animals available for adoption and learn more about how local organizations help animals find homes.

Curiosity, Confidence and Social Skills

“The animals immediately sparked students’ curiosity and gave them a natural way to engage with the people and world around them,” said Victoria Williams, assistant school director. “It was wonderful to see them enjoying the experience while showing how much their confidence and social skills have grown.”

Community outings give High Road School students opportunities to apply skills they have been developing at school in real-world settings. Throughout the Petco visit, students practiced communicating with others, following expectations, navigating a public space, and demonstrating greater independence.

Putting CASE Values Into Practice

Students also put the school’s CASE values – Considerate, Accountable, Safe and Engaged – into action throughout the trip. The experience gave them a chance to demonstrate their growth in social skills while successfully exploring a new environment alongside their peers.
