Auburn School Success: Finding the Right Environment

When Charlie started first grade in a public school French immersion classroom of 26 students, it was clear something wasn’t working. Bright, active, and full of energy, Charlie became dysregulated, which was categorized as disruptive.

A Family Searching for Support

“Charlie is an on-the-go, talkative, bubbly person,” said mom Katie. “But at school, that spark was gone. Charlie didn’t know how to be in that environment, and it was heartbreaking to watch.”

Teachers estimated that Charlie engaged in learning for under 10 percent of the school day. “There just weren’t enough people or supports in place to help,” Katie said. “We worried Charlie was becoming depressed.”

Midway through first grade, the family made the decision to find a different environment – one that could meet Charlie where they were and help them rediscover joy in learning.

Why Auburn Became the Turning Point

“We found Auburn, and it was clear almost immediately that this was the right place,” Katie said. “The staff knew how to help Charlie and how to teach Charlie to help themselves.”

Within weeks, the change was visible. “We saw Charlie return to themselves,” Katie said. “That sense of checking out disappeared.”

Now a fourth grader, Charlie has been at The Auburn School for more than three years. Over that time, Charlie has worked with teachers and staff who have nurtured curiosity, self-awareness, and confidence. “Charlie is surrounded by fantastic staff who know, get, and love Charlie,” Katie said. “They encourage and embolden Charlie to understand what helps them be at their best and to advocate for what they need.”

Growing Confidence and Independence

That advocacy has become one of Charlie’s strengths. “Charlie now asks thoughtful questions about what’s allowed at school and seeks clarification when needed,” Katie said. “That kind of independence and comfort comes from being in a community that’s safe and affirming.”

Auburn has also made space for Charlie’s passions. “Charlie loves flying things and birds,” Katie said. “Teachers have woven those interests into lessons, helping Charlie stay engaged and excited to learn. That creativity and flexibility really set Auburn apart.”

For Katie, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience has been Auburn’s inclusive culture. “Charlie is non-binary and Auburn has been fully affirming,” she said. “That sense of belonging has given Charlie the foundation to grow into a confident, imaginative person.”

Auburn School Success That Builds Self-Worth

Katie believes Auburn has helped Charlie not only rediscover learning, but also self-worth. “Just last week, Charlie said, ‘I’m very smart,’” she recalled.

Because the setting sees every child for who they are, Katie said Charlie and their classmates thrive. “Auburn understands these kids individually and supports them as the amazing, unique people they are,” she said. “It’s a place that helps them all become their best selves.”

Surrounded by staff who understand them, Charlie has found a community that helps them grow at their own pace and in their own way. In many ways, the school proves to be exactly right for a student whose interests, strengths, and spirit are meant to soar.
