Lamonte Finds His Footing at High Road School of Anne Arundel County

When Lamonte enrolled at High Road School of Anne Arundel County in August 2024, he was an 11th grader looking for a fresh start. Today, as he prepares to graduate after two years at the school, he is leaving with strong grades, consistent attendance, and a renewed sense of confidence.
A Fresh Start at High Road School of Anne Arundel County
Before arriving at High Road, Lamonte struggled to earn passing grades. He often skipped class and felt discouraged by the environment at his previous schools.
At High Road, staff focused on meeting Lamonte where he was academically and helping him build the skills needed to succeed. Teachers provided work at both his instructional and grade level, helped him learn how to advocate for himself, and gave him opportunities to contribute around the school through different jobs.
The support made a difference quickly.
“Lamonte immediately started making progress with us. He seemed ‘at home’ from his first week,” said Kelly Martin, program director.
Student Growth at High Road School of Anne Arundel County
Over time, Lamonte’s growth became clear. He started passing all of his classes and began helping mentor other students. His confidence in the classroom grew along with his willingness to support his peers.
Using Coping Skills and Staying on Track
Earlier this year, Lamonte faced a setback that tested the skills he had been learning. During a moment of frustration, he was able to use the coping strategies he had practiced.
“Lamonte remained safe even though he was angry. Lamonte also used the coping skills we taught him, picked himself up, dusted himself off and got right back on track,” Martin said.
His family has seen the transformation as well.
“Our family has taken time to reflect on Lamonte’s significant journey and development during his time at High Road School. We are profoundly proud of the remarkable transformation we’ve witnessed in him. He has not only matured considerably but has also cultivated a robust sense of self-confidence that radiates in his interactions and endeavors,” wrote his mom.
She went on to say that “Lamonte’s newfound understanding that diligence and perseverance are the cornerstones of success has profoundly influenced his approach to learning and personal growth. This heightened self-awareness, coupled with his willingness to apply himself, has been truly inspiring. He has learned self-control and has been able to demonstrate that by making better choices when feeling frustrated. We firmly believe that this positive shift is a direct result of the empowering environment you’ve cultivated, which has allowed him to feel valued and recognize his intrinsic potential.”
Preparing for Life After High School
Today, Lamonte describes himself as a student who has finally found a school where he is happy. Outside of school, he works part-time with Maryland’s Division of Rehabilitation Services. During his time at High Road, he also had the opportunity to gain work experience at a local tech company and grocery store.
For Martin and the High Road team, Lamonte’s story reflects what can happen when students receive the right support at the right time.
“Lamonte is much more confident,” Martin said. “He found a school where he is happy.”
