High Road Students Gain Career Skills at Howard Community College

Learning in a College Environment
A group of eight select 11th- and 12th-grade students from High Road Academy of Howard County expanded their career readiness skills this fall through a workforce development partnership with Howard Community College (HCC). Throughout September and October, students traveled to the HCC campus to participate in the program, giving them the opportunity to learn directly in a college environment.
Building Practical Workplace Skills
During the program, participants completed coursework focused on Microsoft Office Skills and Customer Service Fundamentals, gaining practical tools they can apply in future educational and job settings. Upon completing the program, students earned a workforce training certificate from HCC.
Through hands-on activities, students built day-to-day workplace skills, gained confidence and explored postsecondary pathways in a structured, supportive setting.
Opening Doors to Future Opportunities
“It felt like I was stepping into a different world because it was outside of my normal routine and something completely new,” said 11th grader Chris R.B. “It opened a door for my future and showed me that I have different choices and opportunities.”
“Opportunities like this give our students meaningful experiences that help prepare them for life beyond high school while building independence, confidence and an understanding of the possibilities available to them,” said Jordan Pugh, school director at High Road Academy of Howard County.
