Student Spotlight: Bobby Steps Outside His Comfort Zone and Thrives
For most of his time at High Road School of Naperville, Bobby preferred the familiarity and routine of the school environment he had known since first grade.
Now, as he prepares to enter high school, he is embracing new challenges, building confidence, and even exploring opportunities to reconnect with his home school.
Building Confidence Through New Challenges
Bobby recently completed eighth grade and has made remarkable progress during his years at High Road. According to Jenna Lucio, MA, clinical director, Bobby initially struggled with trust, self-confidence, and stepping outside of his comfort zone. Over time, however, he developed into one of the school’s strongest student leaders.
“He has pushed through so much,” Lucio said. “He’s become a leader who supports other students and encourages them when they’re having a difficult day.”
One of Bobby’s biggest accomplishments this year was joining the tennis team at his home school, an experience that would have seemed unlikely in the past.
For years, Bobby had little interest in participating in activities outside of High Road. He appreciated the smaller, supportive environment and was hesitant to put himself in unfamiliar situations. Through conversations at school about personal growth and future goals, Bobby began considering new opportunities.
Together, they researched activities available at his home school and found an intramural tennis program where students could participate without the pressure of tryouts or cuts.
“It was really about him realizing how far he had come,” Lucio said. “His confidence was growing, and he finally believed he could do it.”
Growing Beyond His Comfort Zone
The experience has exceeded expectations.
As Bobby attended practices and met new people, his confidence continued to grow. Lucio said the change became visible on the tennis court but also throughout the school day.
“He stands a little taller now,” she said. “You can see how proud he is of himself.”
That confidence has carried into other areas of school life. Bobby helps with morning and afternoon announcements, leads townhouse meetings, and assists staff with tasks throughout the building. He is often one of the first students to encourage classmates who are struggling.
Around High Road, Lucio refers to him as “the mayor” because everyone knows him and appreciates his willingness to help.
“He is an incredible peer and role model,” she said. “He reminds other students that things can get better because he’s lived it himself.”
Developing Leadership and Self-Advocacy
Bobby has also developed greater self-awareness. Where he once viewed taking a break as a setback, he now recognizes when he needs one and advocates for himself appropriately. Those skills have helped prepare him for the transition to high school and the new opportunities ahead.
Looking ahead, Bobby is excited about continuing to challenge himself. He and his family have already begun discussing the possibility of taking a class at his home school while maintaining the support of High Road. He is also considering participating in additional intramural sports, including cross country.
For Lucio, Bobby’s willingness to have those conversations is one of the clearest signs of his growth.
“He has overcome a lot of obstacles and should be really proud of himself,” she said.
