Throughout World Autism Month, the High Road School of Hoffman Estates community came together to celebrate neurodiversity, promote understanding, and highlight the importance of inclusion across the school community. Students, staff, and community partners participated in a variety of activities designed to foster connections.

Celebrating Inclusion Through Schoolwide Activities

Each Friday, students participated in sensory-focused activities that encouraged self-regulation, movement, and fun. These experiences allowed students to explore their sensory preferences in a supportive environment while celebrating individuality.

One of the highlights of the month was the Autism Walk, which brought excitement and connection to the entire school. Students enjoyed mini horse interactions, refreshing Kona Ice, and outreach from local police and fire departments. Classrooms also joined in a friendly lap-walking competition, reinforcing teamwork and school spirit while promoting acceptance.

Creativity and Community Connection

Creativity took center stage with a door-decorating competition, where classrooms transformed their doors into vibrant displays celebrating inclusion and understanding. Students also showcased their creativity through a T-shirt decorating competition, designing shirts that reflected the importance of celebrating inclusion, acceptance, and neurodiversity.

“Inclusion and awareness are key components of student success at High Road School of Hoffman Estates,” said Justine Cutro, director, High Road School of Hoffman Estates. “By collaborating with students, staff and community partners, we continue to strengthen understanding of how best to support and accommodate students with autism.”
