Grizzlies Rally Past Panthers in Sierra Schools’ March Madness Championship

Students from three Sierra Schools of California campuses – Sacramento, Solano, and San Joaquin – came together for a day of competition and school pride during a March Madness Basketball Tournament. The event brought students and staff into the gym to cheer on players, many of whom were participating in an organized sport for the very first time.
Sierra Schools March Madness Tournament Builds Confidence
The tournament, refereed by Regional Director Andy Hinkel-Lipsker, concluded with an unforgettable championship game as the Sacramento Grizzlies secured a four-point comeback victory over the Solano Panthers.
“Our students often do not get the opportunity to participate in traditional school experiences like sports teams and tournaments – this gave them that chance,” said Lisa Maher, regional director, Sierra Schools of Northern California.
The positive atmosphere and sportsmanship displayed by the students made the tournament especially meaningful. Teammates encouraged one another, celebrated successes, and helped each other through challenges. One student captured the impact perfectly when he told his dad, “I have never done a school sport before, and I finally got to do it!”
Standout Moments from the Championship Game
Standout moments on the court included Josiah and Aaron leading the way for the Grizzlies, while Malachi and Kai made strong contributions for the Panthers, earning cheers for their confidence and hustle. For the San Joaquin Sharks, players Hunter and Jayden consistently showed determination and teamwork.
“The players also got the opportunity and trust to be competitive and handle disappointment and positive recognition,” said Maher. “They gave themselves and each other the space to make mistakes and learn from them. Most importantly, they got to feel what it is like to be on a team.”
A Team Effort Behind the Tournament
Thank you to the staff and coaches who coordinated the teams, created the tournament schedule, and served as announcers. Coaches from each campus included: Mr. Thompson and Mr. Ford from Sacramento; Mr. Austin, Mr. Frank, and Ms. Janice from Solano, and Ms. J & Ms. E from San Joaquin. A special thank you goes to Ms. Tina, who kept score, and Ms. Ashley, who manned the snack bar.
The March Madness Tournament highlighted how region-wide events can build confidence, strengthen relationships, and create lasting memories for students.
