Pi Day Chess Tournament at Excel Southwest

On March 14, students from Excel and SAFE campuses throughout Chicago came together at Excel Southwest for the fourth annual Pi Day Chess Tournament. The event started with just two schools participating around Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical constant pi, which is approximately 3.14.

“It seemed fitting for a school focused on STEM to celebrate our students’ interests in mathematics and critical thinking with such a tournament,” said Jake M. Benke, director of Excel Southwest.

Growing Participation in the Pi Day Chess Tournament

The event drew a record turnout this year, with 16 players competing, up from six participants when the tournament first began.

Southwest reclaimed the championship by defeating the defending champions, Englewood, which had two students earn individual awards.

Players with the best records received individual prizes, and in celebration of Pi Day, everyone enjoyed pizza and a baker’s square pie.

Building a Meaningful Student Experience

“I wanted to thank everyone for helping build the tournament over the years, making it a smooth day that elevated our students who like playing chess,” said Benke.

Congratulations to all winners and participants.
