Student Success at Sierra School of Sacramento

Hameed began his journey at Sierra School of Sacramento in January of 2015 after experiencing limited success in previous school settings. From the start, Sierra became a place where Hameed could build skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Over the next ten years, he made steady and meaningful progress, ultimately graduating from Sierra in December of 2025.

Building Independence and Self-Regulation Skills

Throughout his time at Sierra, Hameed worked toward greater independence, self-regulation, and community readiness. Once requiring long-term 1:1 support and facing significant challenges during transportation, Hameed learned to ride safely by remaining in the vehicle, keeping his seatbelt fastened, and appropriately requesting preferred changes, such as a different song on the radio. Staff achieved these gains through consistent structure, positive reinforcement, and targeted support to strengthen executive functioning skills, including waiting, impulse control, and adapting to change.

Social Growth and Meaningful Relationships

Transportation also became an opportunity for social growth. Hameed now greets staff with a friendly “good morning” when entering the van and waves goodbye at drop off, reflecting increased social awareness and connection.

Anyone who worked with Hameed came to know his signature phrases, from “pick it up” and “pretty soon” to his well-known favorites, “Costco pizza and Pepsi.” These moments captured his personality and helped build meaningful relationships along the way.

Transition to Adulthood and Continued Student Success

As a result of his growth, Hameed successfully faded from long-term 1:1 support and was accepted into an adult day program, a milestone that supports a smoother transition into adulthood. We are incredibly proud of Hameed and the progress he has made, and we celebrate his success as a reflection of what is possible with individualized support, patience, and belief in a student’s potential.
