A Search for the Right School Fit

When Tianna and Teddy began searching for a school for their son, Tallen, they wanted a place that would truly see him.

Now in second grade and in his third year at The Auburn School, 8-year-old Tallen is thriving in ways his parents once hoped for but couldn’t quite imagine.

“Before Auburn, he was in a large pre-K program,” Tianna said. “The teachers cared, but there were so many students and not enough specialists to support him. We wanted a school that could meet his learning style and help him grow as a whole child.”

Collaboration and Consistency Make the Difference

Tallen, who is on the autism spectrum, needed consistency and collaboration, which was difficult to achieve when services were spread thin. “What I love about Auburn is how everyone works together,” said Tianna. “They even coordinate with his BCBA and outside specialists. It feels like a true team with everyone on the same page, working toward the same goal.”

That partnership and communication quickly eased the family’s worries.

“When your child is neurodiverse, finding the right school can be nerve-wracking,” Tianna said. “But before Tallen even started, the Auburn team took the time to observe him and really get to know him. They saw my kid … all the things I see in him every day.”

A Mission That Celebrates Every Child’s Strengths

For Tianna, that understanding reflects Auburn’s mission in action. “Their philosophy of nurturing unique minds captivated me,” she said. “That’s exactly what they do. They see each child’s strengths and help those strengths shine. I always joke with [school executive director] Andy that he’s like Charles Xavier, helping each kid embrace what makes them special.”

Growth, Confidence, and Connection at The Auburn School

Since enrolling, Tallen’s growth has been remarkable. His communication skills have flourished, and he’s developed greater independence and self-awareness. “The social-emotional part has really matured,” Tianna said. “He’s learning to communicate his needs, take accountability, and ask for help. Everyone loves Tallen, and they nurture not just his academics, but his character.”

Progress reports and conferences reinforce that sense of partnership. “They don’t just talk about grades,” she said. “They talk about the totality of my child – where he’s strong, where he struggles, and how they’re bridging the gaps. It’s thoughtful and data-driven, but also deeply personal.”

Tianna says the journey to Auburn required faith, but it was the right decision. “Shopping around for schools when your child learns differently is hard,” she said. “But Auburn made that leap feel safe. They built a community around us. They care about helping Tallen succeed not just in school, but in life.”

A True Community for Neurodiverse Students

For the family, Auburn isn’t just where Tallen learns, it’s where he’s understood. “He’s amazing and at Auburn, they see that too.”
