This fall marks Jennifer Johnson’s 10-year anniversary with High Road Schools of Connecticut and B.E.S.T. Academy.

Johnson knew from an early age that she wanted to be a teacher. Inspired by the educators in her life–especially her sixth-grade homeroom and science teacher –who helped solidify Johnson’s decision to pursue a career in education.

That passion led her to a career in special education, where she has dedicated herself to helping students overcome challenges and achieve success. Today as regional director, Johnson helps lead multiple schools, shaping the lives of both students and educators. We sat down with her to reflect on her journey, the impact of her work, and what continues to inspire her.

What initially drew you to High Road Schools and what has kept you here for 10 years?

When I joined the organization, I saw it as a bridge – an opportunity to gain leadership experience while running a program. But once I got started, I realized this wasn’t just a stepping stone; it was home.

Over the years, I’ve grown within the company, expanding my impact from a single school to multiple schools and teams. The ability to make a difference on a larger scale is what has kept me here.

How have you grown professionally over that time?

Leaders at High Road Schools have always encouraged my development. I’ve had access to both formal and informal mentors and I’ve been given the tools to grow as a leader. This January, I started pursuing my doctorate in education, something I’ve always dreamed of, and the tuition reimbursement program has made that possible. I also love that I can always reach out to my colleagues for guidance – we truly have a culture of continuous improvement and support.

What about the High Road Schools’ mission resonates with you?

We don’t give up on students. Too often, our schools are seen as a “last resort”, but we focus on helping our students move forward, whether that means returning to public school or continuing to thrive in our program. We individualize academic and behavioral supports to meet students where they are, ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed.

What do you see as your most important responsibility?

The students – 100%. Everything we do is about getting the students what they need, whether that’s academic support, social-emotional learning, or behavioral interventions. Recently we hired BCBAs to enhance our classroom management strategies, and I work closely with our educators to make sure we’re meeting IEP goals and supporting each child effectively.

What advice would you give to new special education professionals?

Do a little bit of everything. It’s easy to think you need to specialize right away, but the best way to grow is to support your colleagues, working with students across different needs, and staying open to learning. Special education is always evolving, and the more experience you gain, the better you’ll be at serving students.

What makes High Road Schools a fulfilling place to work?

The support at High Road is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Our leadership team is hands-on, we’re in the classrooms, responding to crises, and working side by side with teachers. It’s a place where people truly care, and where new opportunities are constantly created to better serve our students.

Thank you, Jennifer, for your dedication to High Road School students and staff.
