Double the Determination at Sierra School of Gateway

This year marked an exciting milestone for Sierra School of Gateway as it welcomed students placed through a partnership with the Queen Creek School District – twin brothers “K.” and “N.” The third grader’s journey reflects both the impact of individualized support and the power of strong district collaboration.

For their family, finding the right learning environment was critical. Prior to enrolling at Sierra, school had become stressful for the family. It became clear that they needed a different setting that could meet their academic, social, and emotional needs with specialized services.

How Twin Brothers Thrive with Individualized Support

Through the Queen Creek School District’s partnership with Sierra School of Gateway, “K” and “N” were placed into programs designed to provide structure, expertise, and personalized learning. Despite being twins, their strengths and challenges are different, and Sierra was able to place them in separate classrooms to better support their individual identities and learning styles. Both students receive services aligned with their full IEPs, ensuring targeted support and clear goals.

According to faculty and staff, their progress has been remarkable. K., who entered with stronger academic skills, has been building friendships, engaging socially, and learning to advocate for his needs. N., who initially expressed frustration with reading, has begun to re-engage through personalized instruction that connects learning to his interests, like reading materials centered around Star Wars.

Most importantly, the twins are once again excited to come to school, a milestone their family had hoped for. Their mom, Maggie, shared how meaningful the change has been for their family.

A Meaningful Change for the Family

“The experience has been incredibly positive,” she said. “Every staff member we’ve interacted with has been kind, welcoming, and consistently shown a great attitude. “One of my biggest priorities from the start was rebuilding trust for my boys, and I truly appreciate how intentional the team has been in making that happen.”

She went on to describe how hearing her sons talk about feeling respected, listened to, and supported has meant everything to their family. Even during challenging moments, she notes the compassion shown by staff and the strong sense of teamwork between home and school.

The Importance of District Collaboration

For Sierra School of Gateway’s Director Jessica Gilmore, their success highlights the importance of district partnerships.

“Collaboration with public school districts allows students to access specialized resources while keeping long-term transition goals in mind,” she said. “The ultimate objective is always to support students in building skills and confidence so they are prepared for the next step in their educational journey.”
