Overcoming Early Challenges

When Sebastian enrolled at the High Road School Hartford Primary as a first grader, he faced significant challenges. He was non-verbal, not yet potty-trained, and struggled to participate. He required outplacement due to significant work refusal and aggression. Sitting at a table, holding a pencil, or using scissors felt overwhelming, and frustration often set in when Sebastian couldn’t communicate his needs.

High Road School of Hartford: Primary A Personalized Program for Growth

From the very beginning, the High Road team created an individualized program tailored to Sebastian’s strengths and needs. With a focus on building tolerance for academic demands in a fun, hands-on environment, and with intensive support in speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills, Sebastian began to thrive. Tools such as an AAC device, a visual schedule, a sensory diet, and the support of a one-to-one paraprofessional helped him engage more fully in both academic and social activities.

Reaching Milestones and Finding His Voice

Within just one year, Sebastian achieved incredible milestones: he became potty-trained, began writing his letters, and started to engage more meaningfully with peers. Most remarkably, he found his voice. Sebastian began verbally communicating, which allowed him to express his wants and needs and form deeper connections with those around him.

Building Independence and Confidence

By his second year, Sebastian no longer required a personal paraprofessional, and his progress on the behavioral system was remarkable. Today, as a fourth grader, Sebastian is taking another huge step forward – starting to transition to a less restrictive environment in his neighborhood public school. On his very first day, High Road team members were present to help with the adjustment and had the joy of watching Sebastian jump right into Morning Meeting, joking with a classmate, and completing teacher-directed tasks with confidence.

“His growth has been so extraordinary that it’s hard to believe he is the same child who began his journey at High Road just a few years ago,” said Jennifer Johnson, regional director, High Road Schools of Connecticut and B.E.S.T. Academy.

Preparing for a Bright Future

Currently, Sebastian participates in a half-day program at High Road while spending the rest of his day in general education at his local school. This gradual transition is helping him continue to build the skills and confidence needed to fully succeed.

Sebastian’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the power of individualized support. He is a shining example of how, with the right tools and encouragement, students can overcome barriers and thrive.
