Samirah Watkins, a standout student at Excel Academy South, has shown how determination and heart can lead to incredible success. Heading to Widener University this fall, her story is a testament to her drive and highlights the importance of support from the school community.

Watkins transferred to Excel Academy South in 2023, looking for a fresh start. “I came in thinking I couldn’t do it,” she said. “But Excel welcomed me with open arms. Everyone wanted to help me succeed.”

In less than two years, Watkins brought her GPA to a 4.0, served as treasurer of the student government, and served on the yearbook and prom committees. And most recently, she took home the honor of being crowned Prom Queen.

Watkins’ hard work didn’t go unnoticed. She received Widener University’s Presidential Scholarship, a merit-based award given to high-achieving students. “It means everything to me,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to go to college, not just for me, but for my mom. She’s my biggest motivation.”

She plans to major in criminology and forensics, with a goal of becoming a crime scene investigator. “Watching crime shows and having family in criminal justice helped spark that dream,” she said.

Watkins credits her transformation to teachers and staff at Excel Academy South who helped her along the way: Mr. Ashton, Ms. Riley, Ms. Masaquoi, Mr. Schulz, and Mr. B. They gave me the best advice. They taught me that not everything needs a reaction and helped me fix my attitude. I wouldn’t be who I am without them.”

Special thanks also go to Mr. Haney, who helped her develop a love for reading, and Mr. Boroughs, who inspired her through culinary class. “Before Excel, I didn’t read much, but now I love it. And I love to cook now, too!”

“Everyone’s not out to get you. Everything doesn’t need a reaction,” was advice she’d give to her younger self or others thinking of joining Excel. “Always come to school, talk to your teachers, get involved, and put yourself out there. The support at Excel will get you everywhere.”

Watkins said she hopes to return to Excel one day to speak to students who may be on a path like hers. “Everyone has their own story. I want them to know it’s possible.”
