Student Spotlight: Jarrell’s Growth at High Road School of Harford County

Starting His Journey at High Road School of Harford County
When Jarrell S. became a student at the High Road School of Harford County last school year, his mother was hopeful but cautious. In his previous school, Jarrell had difficulty regulating emotions, using appropriate coping strategies, and advocating for himself. His transition wasn’t without challenges, but it didn’t take long for the staff to begin seeing glimpses of his potential.
Building Trust and Relationships
“Jarrell came to us with some big emotions and reactions, but also with a big heart,” said Anthony Aiello, senior program director. “Our first priority was to build trust and help him feel safe and seen.”
That foundation made all the difference. Once Jarrell began to build relationships with staff, his growth took off. Over the course of the year, incidents involving significant behavioral challenges dropped dramatically. More importantly, Jarrell started showing up each day with a readiness to learn, a willingness to try new things, and the tools to manage his emotions when things got tough.
Support From Family and School
“It wasn’t always easy,” his mom, Chard’a Cromwell, said. “But the staff never gave up on him. They saw what he could be, and now I see it every day at home too. He’s learned how to talk through things instead of shutting down or acting out. That means everything.”
She added that he loves the teachers at High Road. “He loves everybody there to the point he knows what kind of cars they all drive.”
A Consistent, Individualized Approach
The school team credits a consistent, individualized approach. Through structured routines, positive reinforcement, and a focus on social-emotional development, Jarrell was able to grow.
“Jarrell’s positive energy, contagious smile, and playful spirit endear him to everyone in the building,” said Aiello.
A Transformation That Brings Peace of Mind
For Jarrell’s family, the transformation is life-changing. “This school gave us our son back,” said Cromwell. “He’s happier. He’s more confident. And he’s excited to go to school every morning. That’s not something I thought I’d ever be able to say.”
Jarrell’s progress has also helped alleviate stress for his mom and brings her peace of mind that he is in the right place and getting the support he needs.
“I’m not scared to work anymore,” said Cromwell. “I can go to work and not worry about someone calling asking how quickly I can be at the school. It is a huge relief.”
Anything Is Possible
With the right support and environment, Jarrell has proven that change is possible and that every student deserves the chance to succeed. In the words of his mom, “Anything is possible and he can do anything.”
