Celebrating 18 Years of Dedication at High Road School

Steeve Maxi knew he was destined to work with young people. For the last 18 years, he’s been making a difference in the lives of students at the High Road School of Massachusetts.

Maxi began his career working with the Department of Youth Services, so it was a change when he started at High Road as a teaching assistant.

“Special education was new to me,” he said. “But I fell in love with the system we have here. I love what I do – teaching, training staff, and watching students grow. That’s what keeps me coming back every day.”

Helping Students Build Confidence and Independence

Today, Maxi serves as a transition coordinator, helping high school students build independence and confidence through hands-on learning experiences. His lessons range from job readiness and financial literacy to social skills and independent living. He’s formed relationships with local businesses, including an auto body shop, cellphone repair store, and restaurants, where students can intern to gain real-world work experience.

For Maxi, a large part of his work is showing students that what they learn at school has value beyond the classroom.

Whether he’s guiding a student through meal prep in the school kitchen or leading a lesson on career readiness, Maxi brings purpose and heart to every interaction.

Making Personal Connections That Inspire Growth

One student, Oliver, holds a special place in his heart. “He’s one of my special projects,” Maxi said. “He’s a quiet kid, but my goal is to help him open up and feel comfortable in social settings. Every small conversation, every bit of progress – it matters.”

Maxi’s calm presence is part of what makes him so effective. “When students are stressed, you can’t come in aggressive,” he said. “My approach is calm and collected. I get to know my students, stay honest with them, and be consistent. The more open you are with them – even when it’s something they don’t want to hear – the more they’ll respect and trust you.”

Recognized for Compassion and Leadership

Sandra Barboza, education director at High Road School of Massachusetts, said Maxi is a special human being. “We are very fortunate to have someone of his talent,” she said. “He’s patient, thoughtful, and deeply committed to helping every student reach their potential.”

After nearly two decades on the job, Maxi says his enthusiasm hasn’t faded. “This is my calling,” he said. “I’m not here for the money. I’m here because I enjoy it. Every day is different, and I still have fun. When you love what you do, that makes all the difference.”

His advice for other educators looking to avoid burnout is to “let the good moments override the bad.”

Continuing a Legacy of Student Success

With long-tenured team members like Steeve Maxi, the High Road School of Massachusetts continues to prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
